Frequently Asked Questions
Radiant Ceiling Heating

How much power does the system use?

12" on center: 13 watts per panel (roughly 12.5" long)
16" on center: 17 watts per panel
24" on center: 25 watts per panel
How much does it cost to operate?

Less than baseboard electric. Comparable to gas and oil.

What kind of ceiling can I use?

Sheetrock (aka gypsum board) up to 5/8"
Sheetrock with plaster up to a total of 5/8"
Solid wood up to 3/8"
Plywood up to 1/4"

Why can't I use "Romex" to wire the elements together?

The National Electrical Code requires that the outer jacket on Romex can only be removed inside of a junction box. Since the connections of the heating elements are not in the same place, using single conductor wire allows for making these connections without breaking this jacket.

Although Calorique currently has a connection box which allows for using the system with Romex, this box is intended for use only where local code requires the multi-conductor cable since the box is more expensive and difficult to use.

Do I have to leave access above the elements?

No.

Do I have to wire both ends of the elements?

No.

Why would I want to wire from both ends?

This protects the operation of the elements. If, for example, a bus bar were severed during renovation work*, the entire element would continue to operate.**
* Always turn off power to the elements when doing renovation work to the ceiling or the floor above it.
** If a bus bar is severed, make sure that the severed ends are properly insulated before restoring power to the system.

How many amps does the system use?

At 240 volts, 1000 watts uses 4.2 amps
